Upstate New York, not to be confused with New York City, lies at the cross roads of the Northeast. A conservative region, CNY (Central New York as we call it) is about as different from NYC as you can get...small town values, high taxes, wintery weather, , fanatical sports fans, and frankly about the best place in America to live and work (provided you can find a job). Everything Central New York is mostly focused on editorials and social commentaries.

Clinton Square Downtwon Syracuse, New York. Summer in the Cuse!!
Very interesting observations re Baltimore vs. Syracuse. So much has been written -- mostly by media covering local political campaigns (argh!) -- about how Syracuse can and should apply the Baltoimore model here. Would that it were so! But, there is too much factionalism in Syracuse, too much "us vs. them" and an outlook that someone else must lose for development to win. There is no leadership and certainly no desire for crafting "win/win" in Syracuse. The brightest light on the scen these days, finally, comes from the SU Hill; it has been ages sicne that could be said. Chancellor Canter (Cantor?) gets it. Now, if others will only set aside petty jealousies and the fear that someone may make some money off of development, Syracuse has a chance. Until then, the better comparison will be Syracuse vs. Buffalo, or Syracuse vs. Amsterdam or Syracuse vs. Kingston or any other small NY city that cannot make things happen in a meaningful way.
